OK, last Sunday (as a reward for passing the L1 coaching course, I went for the first time on real white water, and where do you find white water near London? The Lee Valley Legacy Course. it has:

  • grade three rapids
  • 160m long white water course, with a 1.6m descent from the start pool to the finish pool
  • three pumps delivering up to 10,500 litres of water per second – perfect for paddlers wishing to improve their technique, move from flat water to white water and hone skills required to take on the Olympic course.

What a fantastic introduction to white water. I went down 3 times, the first time I swam after only 1/3 or the course, but the 2nd and 3rd time I made it all the way down to the bottom before swimming!

or rather, not having the time. Tomorrow is the last day of my BCU L1 Coaching training. We all passed the written test today, well pleased with that. This means fresh blood of coaches at Leaside, and we can not wait to get going on the water.

The course was/is something of a self discovery, everything sliding into place.

Never have been kayak surfing before - wow, it was amazing! Not sure what I liked more, climbing the waves and riding through them out to catch the green waves, or the actual riding and being pushed towards the beach at an increadible speed.

What I do know though... I am aching all over - but can't wait to be on wild moving water again.

So I did manage to roll again, last night at Laburnum. How exactly? I do not know. Both Steve and Rene who were watching couldn't believe that I actually came up.... To be honest - nor can I. Anyway, I have done it now twice, the rest will follow - Bude here we come!!!

So, I trusted the water, and it did work. My high brace is now of 3 Star standard, and works every time on both sides.

Even better than that, I managed to roll for the first time ever!

Kayaking is ZEN, in the here and now. Not thinking of what might happen, nor how to make it happen. Trust the water and trust yourself.Sure you need to know the technicalities, but it is all about natural movement.

I received a couple of great tips. One from Rene, who is a great believer in Taiji movements, Taiji is all about being in the here and now and natural flow. The other from Mickey Gordon, that I should trust myself, that I have the technical ability and that I can do it. I did it. :-)

I should mention here, that from both Rene and Mickey I got more than just those tips. I would not be able to do what I am doing without either of them. Thank you guys! And thank you to my friend Helen, who was my buddy on the water last Sunday when it all happened.

I know I need to learn to trust, that the water will carry me. Easier said than done though. My head says it will, but something deeper inside says - you might tip over. But why am I worried about that? I love swimming!

I was starting to think that my high-brace was coming together.... but it is not. :-(

Been taking any free minutes to look up some guidence materials - now I am even more confused!

that is a pretty strong statement but true. Not that I am any good at it, but practice will make perfect. Hopefully
